Healthier Grocery Shopping

A healthy life is a good life. And this week, on WKNO’s Life Matters, Erica Walters with the Church Health Center offers tips and suggestions for making healthier choices.

Grocery shopping. We all do it. Whether you do it once-a-week or bi-weekly, it’s more important than you think.

It plays a major role in what you consume. The healthier foods you buy, then the healthier foods you consume, and, the less you eat out. Remember, you are what you eat!

Good grocery shopping requires a game plan. Plan your weekly meals, including snacks. Make a list of all the items you need to make your planned meals happen.

At the store try to shop around the perimeter – that’s where the real food is. Think about it… produce, meat and dairy… all along the perimeter. Also, consider buying items with less than five ingredients. The fewer ingredients, the better.

Eating healthy doesn’t have to break the bank. Avoid name brands and gimmick words. Instead, check out the label and ingredients.

Lastly, as you’re nearing the end of your shopping trip, take a final look at your cart. Does it look like you’re feeding eight kids who have been brainwashed with Saturday morning commercials?

If it’s not healthy for you, it’s not healthy for your kids. And, if it tastes like candy, it is candy.

Try this useful method next time you go grocery shopping. See your waistline shrink and your wallet grow.

I began piano lessons at age 6, trumpet at age 9, and began teaching myself the guitar at 10. My electronics knowledge comes from my father, who had the RCA television and stereo shop in my hometown of Pocahontas, Arkansas for nearly 20 years. My dad is still fixing televisions at age 79.
