TN Wants To Prove Failing Schools Can Be Turned Around Quickly

The State of Tennessee is running day-to-day operations at Corning Elementary and two other schools in Frayser.

At Corning Elementary in Frayser, a group of kindergarteners gathered around their teacher Erica Allen. As they all clapped in rhythm, Allen asked her young students to read the word on a card she was holding. They chanted, “Can! Can! Can!”

The kindergarteners don’t remember this, but last year Corning was run by Memphis City Schools, and the school’s average score on the state’s TCAP exam was an F.

New State-Run School District Is Facing An Old Problem

Pizza was served at a parent meeting at Westside Middle School.

 

Come August, the state will be calling the shots at Frayser Elementary, Corning Elementary, and Westside Middle. The schools are the first to be announced in Tennessee’s Achievement School District. The achievement district was created as a part of the state’s application to get federal “Race to the Top” money and it is a state-run district for low performing schools.
