Hispanic Newspapers Defy National Newspaper Trend

Memphis, TN – With newspaper advertising and circulation declining nationwide, there is a bright spot. Nicole Erwin reports.

The acceleration of the decline of the nation's newspaper industry has yet to hit its peak it seems. At least 120 newspapers have filed bankruptcy since 2008 and more than 21,000 jobs lost. Yet, in the midst of this hardship, one portion of the industry has kept its head above the rest, the Hispanic Newspapers.

First Probable Case of Swine Flu Reported in Shelby County

Memphis, TN – The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department announced today the first probable case of swine flu in Shelby County. Candice Ludlow reports.

Authorities closed Incarnation Elementary School in Collierville today after officials announced that a 12-year-old student from the Catholic school has tested positive for swine flu. The tests have a 95 percent accuracy rate, but further testing will be done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Refugees Struggle for Better Life in Memphis

Memphis, TN – Memphis is a refugee resettlement site and has been since the end of the Vietnamese conflict in 1975. Refugees from all over the world are brought here every year. Hundreds of individuals looking for a better life, the first step, knowing the English language. Here more than 20 individuals sit in a classroom to learn the basics. Some have attended for months, for others this is their first or second visit. Before I leave the class a middle aged man from Haiti calls out to me.

Prep Academies Try to Address Over-age High School Students' Needs

Memphis, TN – Memphis City Schools is home to 110,000 students. Superintendent Kriner Cash says that 30,000 of those are at least a year behind. To address the needs of those over-age for grade by two years or more, Cash announced last fall that he would open MCS Prep Academies -- one in each quadrant of the city. Candice Ludlow reports.

"With all the prep schools we try to offer a private school feel in a public school environment."
