I could not agree more. At Church Health, we run a gap year program where we identify young students, especially from Memphis, and students of color who have the desire to be doctors. And they work with us for a year while getting clinical experience to be physicians, dentists, and optometrists. We've been doing this for 35 years and have had hundreds of students spend a year with us who are now doctors in Memphis.
But the idea of connecting with and mentoring our young future is something I believe we all should be doing. If you don't have family members who can open doors for you, it is very hard to know how to do it on your own. It is impossible to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. We each need help. So I encourage you to find the young students who could benefit from the experience you have and share it with them on an ongoing basis. You will make a difference in their lives and they will make a difference in yours. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.
