Make the most out of it

A recent column in the New York Times suggested writing your own obituary once a year.

I find great value in this idea. Life is not limitless. We need to make the most out of our time, but how do we know we are doing that if we don't from time to time see where we're going? All too often, life is on autopilot and you never question what you're doing. It usually takes a big life change, mostly imposed by outside forces rather than a decision you make, in order to shift direction in your life. Writing your obituary can reconnect you with what really matters. It can help you live your life the way you want to be remembered.

In writing your own obituary, ask yourself, how did I make the world a better place? Who was the real me? Who will miss me the most? What would you love for people to say about you once you're gone? Now, is that how you are living your life? It's not too late to make changes, but if nothing changes, nothing changes. And I hope you will make sure to find some humor along the way. If you can't laugh at yourself, that's a problem. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.

Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, is founder and CEO of Church Health, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable health care for working, uninsured or underserved people and their families.
