BTH: Memphis' Fight Against COVID-19

The number of cases of COVID-19 in Shelby County is growing rapidly. Since the outbreak, many healthcare officials have urged social distancing, maintaining at least 6 feet between people to help slow the spread of the virus. Pediatrician-in-Chief at Le Bonheur and Senior Associate Dean of UT Medical School John McCullers says that social distancing is one of the less drastic ways to combat the spread of the virus. Mitigation and suppression are names for other techniques used.

McCullers describes the difference in techniques to fight the spread of COVID-19 as he joins Pediatric-Infectious Disease Doctor Nicholas Hysmith for this week’s WKNO-TV Behind the Headlines with host Eric Barnes and Daily Memphian reporter Bill Dries.

Guests also discuss testing for the novel coronavirus. Hysmith says there is a shortage of testing kits, making it currently impossible for everyone who has symptoms to get tested. However, the doctors estimate about 2 weeks before Shelby County has the needed amount of testing kits.

Wrapping up, guests talk about changes at medical facilities, as well as possible changes to the healthcare system due to this outbreak.
