Advent: A Season of Hope, Light and Peace

As a young Presbyterian, I remember receiving a colorful Advent calendar most Decembers.

Each day, I would carefully open the notched door corresponding to the day, and a Bible verse would be revealed until the birth of Jesus on December 25.  Today, there are Advent calendars for every taste as well as price point.

For Christians, Advent is a time of preparation.  The scripture passages we read during this time remind us of God’s promise to send us a savior.  We read about Mary and Joseph and ponder how these humble people were chosen by God to be Jesus’ parents.

The prominent Advent image in my mind has always been one of pregnant Mary sitting atop a donkey with Joseph walking alongside leading them to Bethlehem. This image has led me to an understanding of Advent as a journey, and not just to Bethlehem where the Christ child will be born.  Advent is a journey that leads us to a new understanding of our relationship to the world and to one another as people of faith.  In that sense, Advent is about our own rebirth.

My prayer is that this season of hope, light and peace will be transformative for each of you.

Wishing all of you a blessed holiday season, this is Butch Odom for Church Health.
