Back To School: Preparing Your Child for In-Person Learning

Some schools have been planning safe reopening strategies during COVID-19. Here are a few tips to help your children feel ready to return to in person learning.

Honest Communication

Talk honestly with your child about the changes that they can expect at school.  Go over any guidelines your school has shared. This may reduce stress for your child and for you as a parent.

Health & Safety

Make sure your child does not have a fever, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, severe headache, vomiting, or body aches. If your child has had close contact to a COVID-19 case, they should not go to school. For a known exposure follow your local health department’s guidance around testing, quarantine, and isolation.

Mask Wearing

Go over how to properly wear a mask. It must always cover the nose and mouth.  Help children understand that when they wear a mask it protects their friends, and when their friends wear a mask it protects them.  Practice wearing it at home, allow them to see themselves wearing it in the mirror, and let a favorite stuffed animal wear a mask to make it more fun.

Returning Home

Teach your children to wash hands with soap and water when they return home.  Have a designated spot for them to keep their backpack and to do their homework.

Stay enthusiastic about school while also staying safe. And remember to look to your local health department and the Centers for Disease Control for the latest guidance regarding COVID-19.

Stay safe. Stay healthy.
