BTH: Combating Poverty in the Mid-South

A time of joy and happiness for many, the holidays are for others a season of struggle.

Leaders of various Memphis charitable organizations join WKNO-TV's Behind the Headlines' Eric Barnes and Daily Memphian reporter Bill Dries for a look at some of the challenges faced by folks trying to make ends meet.

Keith Norman, Pastor of First Baptist Church Broad, says that while Memphis has been cited as one of America's most philanthropic cities, many citizens live below the poverty line. Norman's solutions include employment training and better resources for low-to-no income families.

Estella Mayhue-Greer, president and CEO of the Mid-South Food Bank, says that when it comes to a decision between paying bills and buying food, “food is left off the table.” Panelists discuss ways that organizations are providing assistance, such as giving out backpacks filled with food and necessities.

President and CEO of the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association, Sally Jones Heinz, adds that hard times can befall people at any time, whether it's due to overwhelming medical bills or getting laid off from work. Charitable organizations, guests explain, need year-round support.
