Kids in the Kitchen

Salud! Cooking School at Whole Foods Market

Kids can cook!

Start them young and with any luck they'll develop a lifelong love of the kitchen as well as skills they can use throughout adulthood.

Us parents get something out of this kitchen time, too. First, there's the quality time you'll share with your kids. Then there's the pleasure of sitting down at the table to enjoy what you've whipped up together.

Wondering how to get your kids involved in cooking?

I asked Bri Rogers of Salud! Cooking School at Whole Foods Market to share some tips.

“I think the first step that parents can do is to actually let their kids be in the kitchen. Let them help before you’ve turned on the stove, before you’ve turned on the oven. Allow them to measure out the ingredients, whether that be flour, sugar, cracking eggs, stirring something. Actually letting them take part in the process is a good first step.”

Next she recommends, “Make it Fun! As parents and adults we get bored in the kitchen. Well, kids get bored too. Just make it an adventure in the kitchen.”

And here’s one tip I am looking forward to trying out: “Also, let the kids choose one meal that they are going to prepare during the week.” Bri recommends having your child not only chose and help prepare the meal, but go grocery shopping with you.

Kids’ classes at Salud! start as early as age 6, but you can introduce your little ones to cooking as early as three or four years old by having them help measure and stir.

Chocolate Brownies with Chocolate Ganache

Makes 24 brownies

  • ½ cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon fine salt
  • 10 oz. semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, plus more for butter the paper
  • 2 cup sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Glaze:

  • 6 oz. semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • ½ cup heavy cream

Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350F.  Line a 13x9x2 inch baking pan with parchment or waxed paper, so that the edges come up the sides.  Lightly butter the paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.  Set aside.

Combine the semi-sweet and unsweetened chocolates and the butter in a heatproof medium bowl.  Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.  Turn off the heat.  Set the bowl on the pan, over the heated water, to melt the chocolate gently.  Whisk until smooth.

In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla.  Stir the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture until evenly blended.  Add the dry ingredients and mix just until blended.  Take care not to overmix the batter.  Transfer to the prepared pan.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the brownies comes out coated with a fudgy crumb – about 25 to 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, to make the glaze, put the remaining semi-sweet chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl.  In a small saucepan, simmer the heavy cream and pour it over the chocolate.  Let stand for 5 minutes, then stir until melted and smooth.

Spread the ganache evenly over the warm brownies and let set to room temperature.  Cool the brownies in the pan on a rack.

Lift the edges of the paper to take the brownies out of the pan.  Cut into 24 squares.  Serve.
