Film critic John Beifuss says the classic 1939 film might seem politically incorrect today, but it could also reveal commentary on the South's original sin.
The film is due to be screened tonight (August. 28) as part of theOrpheum's Summer Movie series. But with with Confederate flag recently making national headlines, some say "Gone with the Wind" is another romanticized symbol of the antebellum South that needs to be removed from marquees.
In a recent article, Commercial Appeal film critic John Beifuss joined editor Chris Herrington in critiquing the film through a modern lens. Both agree that it's a film that has both stood the test of time while defying simple categorization as a racist relic of the past.
