One of Memphis' great producers and engineers is back in Memphis this week, revisiting old haunts, showcasing his photography and even performing at the Hard Rock Cafe. Terry Manning talks to WKNO about sound, imagery and his latest instrumental album.
Terry Manning arrived in Memphis in the 1960s as the teenage son of a Texas preacher. But it was the soul music of Stax that made him want to become a musician. One day, he took a bus down to the recording studio, and with a combination of willpower and good timing, he entered the music business.
Throughout his career, he has produced, engineered and wrote music at Stax and Ardent. He also took photos along the way. A new exhibit of his photography is currently on display at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
Currently living in the Bahamas, Manning is in Memphis this week playing and talking about music.
