Nearly 25 percent of Memphis residents live below the poverty level. Richard Smith, executive vice president of global support for FedEx Express, says that the city's poverty rate and equity level are among the major challenges businesses face in the Mid-South. However, Smith says that Memphis has its advantages, including its geography and demographics.

Smith joins host Eric Barnes and the Daily Memphian’s Bill Dries for this week’s WKNO-TV Behind the Headlines. Smith discusses economic development in the Mid-South, as well as the struggle to aid and grow minority-owned businesses.

Wrapping up, Smith discusses the move of FedEx Logistics headquarters to the old Gibson Guitar Factory and the decisions that had to be made for FedEx to make such a move.
