The selection of Sen. Kamala Harris as Joe Biden's running mate may not have been the first choice of Democrats on the far left, who have been pushing a more progressive agenda in the waning days of President Trump's first term. But political analyst Otis Sanford says the moderate Harris is "what the Democratic party needs to take this White House back."

Also this week, the Tennessee General Assembly passed two bills that Sanford says continue to rankle Democrats in the capital. One was protections for Tennessee businesses from "frivolous" COVID-related lawsuits. Another was a crackdown on protesters at the capitol building, raising penalties for activities such as camping out on the property. Sanford says there is a double standard for free speech from when anti-tax protesters converged and caused property damage in the early 2000s.
