Life is too short to take the ugly way home

I was rushing to get home for no particular reason, when my wife, Mary, insisted that I turn left onto a side street that was clearly out of the way.

And then she told me, and I have never forgotten these words, "Life is too short to take the ugly way home." It is so true in almost every phase of our existence. It applies to our work, our relationships, our thinking, as well as to the route we drive our cars into the garage. Too many times, we are in a hurry to get to the next thing, only to waste the moment we have right in front of us, failing to see the value of the person or the experience which we assume just doesn't matter.

But we are wrong at every turn if we let the destination negate the journey. So if you are in your car right now or plan to be soon, map out the path where you can embrace Mary's advice. Life is too short to take the ugly way home. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.

Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, is founder and CEO of Church Health, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable health care for working, uninsured or underserved people and their families. In FY2021, Church Health had over 61,300 patient visits. Dr. Morris has an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, and M.D. from Emory University. He is a board-certified family practice physician and an ordained United Methodist minister.
