Practice Matters

There is a reason why a company will offer a million dollars to a fan who can kick a field goal during halftime at the Super Bowl.

It's a safe bet that the selected fan hasn't practiced enough, nor developed enough skill to succeed. Everyone hopes the kicker will win the million dollars, and there's always a random chance. Wouldn't it be cool if the random chance happened before our eyes? It could happen, but it rarely does. Practice matters. It matters in sports, and it matters in our lives. Living a healthy life is a lot like that. Without practice, few play the game well under stress. Without practice patterns, sudden stress knocks us off our feet. That applies to how much we exercise, how well we eat, and how we will care for the spiritual dimension of our lives. So I will always pull for the person kicking the field gold. I saw it happen once, but with the rest of our life, I hope we do those things that are the equal of practicing a sport, but in our own lives lead to a healthier outcome. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.

Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, is founder and CEO of Church Health, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable health care for working, uninsured or underserved people and their families. In FY2021, Church Health had over 61,300 patient visits. Dr. Morris has an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, and M.D. from Emory University. He is a board-certified family practice physician and an ordained United Methodist minister.
