Five years ago, you would say those are the best doctors in Memphis. Now the only patients who get to be treated by them are patients of Church Health, who work in low-wage jobs and also are uninsured. But it's not just physicians. Retirees work in our kitchen, our welcome center and hand-addressed Christmas cards, and it's not just Church Health. Retirees deliver meals from MIFA, sort food at the food bank and volunteer for not-for-profits all over the city. Being retired is an invitation to make a difference in the world without worrying how much you're going to get paid.
In fact, retirement is the only time in your life when time no longer equals money. If you are retired and thinking of volunteering, remember that you will not be the boss and you might be assigned a task that is simple, but it will be necessary to get done. Our volunteer physicians are able to practice medicine in a way that first drew them to be doctors. I hope you have the same experience. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.
