Something is happening in Memphis

56 years ago tomorrow, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis.

Fifteen years ago, I had the privilege of interviewing Ambassador Andrew Young on his first trip back to Memphis since that fateful day. I asked him what he and Dr. King were trying to do in Memphis, and this is what he said. "We were just young pastors trying to do what God called us to do as pastors. That's it." They weren't trying to change the world or call attention to themselves. They were just trying to hear God speak to them and act accordingly.

All these years later, I hope that we can learn from that wisdom. We first need to listen and then act in a way driven by the goodness of God. On the night before his death at Mason Temple, his Been to the Mountaintop speech begins. Something is happening in Memphis. That was true in 1968, and in a different way, it is true today. If we too try to do what God has called us to do, who knows what great things will happen in Memphis. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.
