Police are still on the scene at the Kroger grocery store on Byhalia Road in Collierville where a gunmen opened fire this earlier this afternoon.

At least one person has been killed and 12 others injured. Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane says the gunman is believed to be dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities arrived at the scene at around 1:34 p.m., Lane said, about four minutes after they received the call. Lane said officers proceeded to go aisle by aisle securing the grocery store.

"Historically, not in this case, but historically many of these shooters have very high powered rifles and not one of [the responders] hesitated going in that front door," he said, although he declined to comment further on the weapon used.

Lane said he had never seen anything like this in his 34-year career. It's unclear if the gunman had any connection to the Kroger store.

As of about 3:30 p.m., police were waiting to search what's believed to be the suspect's car in the store parking lot until the area is deemed secure.

This is a developing story.
