After all, only 4% of our city is Catholic. The Pope can feel a world away, but this moment still matters. The new Pope chose the name Leo, a nod to Pope Leo the Great, who stood with the poor and spoke boldly in tough times, and this Pope Leo has lived that mission.
He spent years in Peru working with people who had little but faith. That story, Memphis knows it. We're a city shaped by poverty and perseverance, where faith lives in everyday acts, and Catholic Charities of West Tennessee brings that to life right here, serving meals, offering shelter, helping families get back on their feet. Quiet work, deep impact. So when a man who does that same kind of work steps into the highest role in the church, it says something to us all. It's not Pope Leo's passport that matters to Memphis. It's that he knows what it means to walk with the poor. Maybe, just maybe, it means Memphis is a little closer to Rome than we thought. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.
