William Sloane Coffin, the mentor in my life, once said, "There is no smaller package than a man all bound up in himself."

When we are bound by our own wants, our own cravings, life begins to shrink. Our world becomes a mirror, reflecting only ourselves. We were not made for such small rooms. The soul breathes best in wide spaces, in the laughter of another, in a shared table where no one leaves hungry. Self-interest is a type wrapping. It muffles the sound of others' pain. It blinds us to the beauty beyond our own reflection. But when we tear through that wrapping, something changes. Desire is replaced by devotion. Need is replaced by generosity. A life turned inward is small, no matter how much it owns. A life turned outward is vast, no matter how little it has. The smallest package is the one bound up in its own desires. The largest is the one poured out for the sake of others. Every day we choose, stay wrapped up and small or risk being opened. I hope you choose wisely. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.

Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, founded Church Health, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable health care for working, uninsured, or underserved people and their families.
