Be More Like Your Dog

August is National Dog Month, but honestly, what month isn't?

At Church Health, I'm reminded of this daily because my Bernese Mountain Dog, Mimsy, comes to work with me daily. She carries the noble title of Chief Compassion Officer. While our doctors fret over test results, Mimsy has a different prescription for healing. Wag first, Worry later. She greets everyone with a quiet joy that slips past defenses and lands directly in the heart. Dogs carry a wisdom that feels both ordinary and holy.

They find delight in little things. A hallway turned playground, a hand reaching down to say you matter. They remind us that love is not earned, but given freely and abundantly. So in this National Dog Month, I think Mimsy would want me to say this, wag more, worry less. Seek joy in simple things. Offer compassion without condition, because sometimes the truest medicine doesn't come in bottles. Sometimes it walks on four paws and shows us day after day what it really means to be present. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.

Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, founded Church Health, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable health care for working, uninsured, or underserved people and their families.
