Sometimes you just have to trust someone

Adobe Stock

I was just at another airport returning a rental car with my wife, Mary.

As we headed toward the terminal, dragging all of our bags, there was a service offering to check our bags for free. It wasn't the airline, it was a separate company. Everyone around us walked right past. I told Mary, "I think we should stop." She gave me a look and I said, "Sometimes you just have to trust someone." We live in a time when trust feels like it's disappearing. We are warned about scams, fraud, and hidden motives. Much of that caution is justified, but if we're not careful, healthy skepticism can become a habit of suspicion. The problem is that life doesn't work without trust. Every friendship, every partnership, every community depends on the willingness to believe that most people are acting in good faith. In this case, the service delivered exactly what it promised. Not everyone is deserving of our trust, but if we never extend it, we risk losing something just as valuable as what we're trying to protect, because sometimes you just have to trust someone.
