Memphis College of Art hosts 2 shows of little-known artist Edward Perry

Memphis College of Art

Ed Perry's story is an art-world fairy tale; the great artist who toils in obscurity and is discovered and celebrated after his death.

Edward Perry started as figure skater, attended Memphis Academy of Arts (now Memphis College of Art) from 1967 to 1972, studied physics and lasers, worked with several artists, then turned his back on the commercial art world to build his amazing, elaborate constructions, which weren't exhibited until after his death. And that's the short version!

In this interview, MCA Professor Ellen Daugherty and Dean/VP of Academic Affairs Remy Miller discuss Perry's life and art and these two exhibitions. Most of the pieces in these shows have never been seen in public before.

Edward Perry: Between Canvas and Frame runs through September 19 at the Hyde Gallery at 477 South Main.

Edward Perry: Constructions runs through October 3 at the Alumni Gallery in Rust Hall at Memphis College of Art.
