Final Horn Island Exhibition at Memphis College of Art

James Carey

For 35 years, Memphis College of Art (MCA) students have been following in the footsteps of American artist Walter Inglis Anderson (1903-1965) as they make a 10-day excursion to Horn Island, an uninhabited barrier island off the coast of Mississippi. This year marked the 35th, and final, Horn Island expedition for MCA.

In this interview, MCA Professor and Director of the Horn Island program Don Dumont and MCA Coordinator of External Engagement Olivia Wall discuss the history and value of the Horn Island expeditions to MCA students, faculty and alumni, and upcoming events for the final class year at Memphis College of Art.

On View: August 19 to October 4

Reception: Saturday, August 24 from 5:30-8:30pm

The reception is free and open to the public. Join us for traditional island favorites like BBQ SPAM and Gatorade punch (plus other refreshments!).

I began piano lessons at age 6, trumpet at age 9, and began teaching myself the guitar at 10. My electronics knowledge comes from my father, who had the RCA television and stereo shop in my hometown of Pocahontas, Arkansas for nearly 20 years. My dad is still fixing televisions at age 79.
