Adding Value Equals Success, by John Malmo
Memphis, TN – It's fun to learn about somebody who looked at things as they are, then figured out a better way. Such is the case of Atlanta Watercloset, that provides boutique porta-potties for outdoor events in the Atlanta Area. While most so-called porta-potties are adequate, they pretty well provide the minimum necessity.
So Christine Sweeney decided there's a market for something better, as there almost always is. Her porta-potties look better outside and inside. They're larger and far more commodious. Toilets actually flush. There are fresh-water basins. Soap, towels, and air freshener. Interior lighting. Mirror and coat hook. One model includes a diaper-changing station.
Atlanta weather is suitable for enough outdoor events during the year to provide a sizable market. Primary business categories are outdoor weddings and corporate events. At almost every wedding, Sweeney says, the mother of the bride tells her later that more people commented about the porta-potties than anything else.
Sweeney's success formula is the same as most successful start-ups. Get an idea that will add value to a product or service. Then figure out if you can add that value at a price people will pay.
