Ta-Nehisi Coates is a national correspondent at The Atlantic, where he writes about culture, politics, and social issues. He is the author of the memoir The Beautiful Struggle. One of his most famous articles is "This is How We Lost to the White Man," an honest look at the generational and ideological rifts in the black community; its title is a quote by Bill Cosby. In 2013, Coates’s lively Atlantic blog—a lesson in how to thoroughly engage a community of readers—was named by Time as one of the 25 Best in the World.
Host Jonathan Judaken and Coates talk about his upcoming keynote lecture, part of Rhodes College's Communities in Conversation series on “Race, Region, and the Making of Public Memory: From Civil War to Civil Rights," taking place February 27-March 1, 2014.
They discuss the politics of race in America today, the meaning of a "post-racial" America, President Obama's role as the first African American President, the Civil War, and Coates' definition of true racism in our culture.
