Spotlight for the week of April 25

Memphis is at its most glorious in late April, so it’s a great time to combine an outdoor stroll with your lifelong learning. Elmwood Cemetery, a historic space where many of the most influential Memphians are laid to rest, frequently gives educational tours with themes ranging from true crime to mausoleum architecture.

This Friday, April 29th, they’re offering two tours, new and old, so you can get to know this special space and some of these forever residents.

First, at 1pm, join a guide for Stage & Screen: The Actors and Performers of Elmwood. Connections to Talullah Bankhead, Bing Crosby, Kathy Bates, and many more lie right inside the heart of Memphis. We might be the city of Soul music, but plenty of theatrical and silver screen artists got their start here too.

Then, at 5:30pm, take another round about the cemetery for Scandals and Scoundrels, a walking tour of those residents with questionable backgrounds, and mysterious endings. This tour is a classic, and sells out quickly, but offers a fun way to learn about a darker side of Memphis history. Each tour costs $20 a person and lasts about 90 minutes. These are walking tours, so bring good walking shoes!
