Hispanic Heritage Month

A physician partner of mine once said, "People ask, whatever happened to the American family, where the father works two jobs, the mother stays at home to take care of the kids, and they go to church on Sunday morning?"

That family still exists, it just so happens they speak Spanish.

We are in Hispanic Heritage Month, and Latinos are the fastest-growing community in Memphis. There are 86,000 Latinos living in Shelby County who have created 2,400 businesses. I know we all see Latinos doing landscaping and construction work, but they are also creating jobs and rising into leadership of our major companies. Cazateatro is a fascinating bilingual theater troupe I encourage you to go see.

Latinos in Memphis are broad and diverse, but what they have in common is that they came to Memphis because they love our country, want to work, and are proud to call Memphis home. I encourage you to come to Latin Fest 901 this Saturday at Overton Square, for food, music, and the celebration of our neighbors. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.

Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, is founder and CEO of Church Health, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable health care for working, uninsured or underserved people and their families. In FY2021, Church Health had over 61,300 patient visits. Dr. Morris has an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, and M.D. from Emory University. He is a board-certified family practice physician and an ordained United Methodist minister.
