I work every day at Crosstown Concourse, and often drive down Cleveland Street. Last week, my wife Mary and I pulled into a grocery store we had never been in before, Viet Hoa Market. We've never been there, but it's been open since 1985. We didn't know what to expect. We knew it was an Asian market, but as soon as we walked through the front door, we were no longer in Kansas. They have fruits I have never heard of, pear varieties from all over the world. Live frogs, eels, clams, and tilapia. 10 different types of shrimp, and I'm just getting started.
In the 20th century, America fought wars against Japan, Korea and Vietnam. What were those wars about? Now we are bound through food. We clearly have more that unites us than divides us. Viet Hoa Market is not in New York or Chicago. It's on the corner of Cleveland and Court in midtown Memphis. Bring your kids to come check it out. In December, a high-end Vietnamese restaurant will open in Crosstown and I bet they shop at Viet Hoa Market where we can all feel that diversity makes us better.
