New Vision Services Now Available at Church Health

Church Health

If you are poor and uninsured and you are having a heart attack, when you're taken to any emergency room in town, you will get a heart bypass operation.

But if you are poor and go to that same emergency department because you're going blind, you will be told to make an appointment with an eye doctor. But if you earn near minimum wage, it is unlikely you can afford the treatment.

It is for this reason that later today, Church Health at Crosstown Concourse will have a ribbon-cutting for a brand-new eye clinic dedicated to caring for the vision of the working uninsured. This is a true community endeavor. Church Health is partnering with the Hamilton Eye Institute, the University of Tennessee, our hospitals, and the Southern College of Optometry to do something remarkable. Soon, we will be doing 30 vision-saving surgeries a month, along with preventative care. I don't know what could be more biblical than that, giving the poor who are going blind their vision back. The clinic with the financial help of many, many donors will be named in honor of Dr. Chris Fleming, a renowned Memphis ophthalmologist who brought together everyone involved to show what is possible in God's imagination. This is Dr. Scott Morris for Church Health.

Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, is founder and CEO of Church Health, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable health care for working, uninsured or underserved people and their families. In FY2021, Church Health had over 61,300 patient visits. Dr. Morris has an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, and M.D. from Emory University. He is a board-certified family practice physician and an ordained United Methodist minister.
