Memphis, TN – Documentary maker Tom McPhee had no intention of shooting a film when he went down to the Gulf Coast to volunteer days after Katrina struck. Eighteen months later, he's presenting An American Opera in the eighth annual Memphis International Film Festival. The festival, which runs Thursday March 22 through Sunday March 25 at Malco's Paradiso and Studio on the Square, will screen 58 films from around the world, with a documentary, feature, narrative and animated short, music video, and international masters series.

McPhee will be one of the 56 filmmakers in attendance at the festival. He spoke with producer Sarah Ledbetter about the genesis of his film, the big bang of a whole universe born when the decision was made to separate pets from their owners. McPhee says every American needs to watch this film; listen and find out why.
