Cohen Requests Federal Investigation Into Voting Irregularities

By Candice Ludlow

Memphis, TN – Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen asks Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate voting irregularities that occurred during the August 5th election in Shelby County.

Cohen says, "Thousands of voters were mistakenly turned away from the polls because of inaccurate voter rolls."

The issue with the Electronic Poll Books was discovered early on Election Day. Election Commissioner Bill Giannini says the poll books were loaded with early voting data from the previous election instead of the August 5th election. Those Electronic Poll Books are used in place of paper ones to ensure that people vote one time only and at the correct precinct.

Earlier this week, Giannini asked Shelby County District Attorney General Bill Gibbons to investigate. Gibbons has passed the case to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm says she doesn't know how long the investigation will take.

Several close races are being contested as a result. Meanwhile, the Election Commission is set to certify the election results on August 19.
