Memphis, TN – States across the nation have quickly adopted the use of computer technology in elections. Yet technology is not always the answer. In 2008, the Shelby County Election Commission planned to use new Diebold Electronic Poll Books, but faulty batteries stalled that effort. In May, the electronic poll books were used for the first time to their full capacity. Candice Hoke heads the Center for Election Technology at Ohio State University. She tells Candice Ludlow that electronic poll books can disenfranchise voters.
