Memphis, TN – The Shelby County Election Commission has agreed to put the question of transferring the management of Memphis City Schools to Shelby County Schools to city voters. The referendum will take place 45 to 60 days from today. The commission will meet Wednesday to set the date.
Lawyer Allan Wade made the announcement this morning in chancery court. Wade, on behalf of Citizens for Better Education, had filed a lawsuit against the Shelby County Election Commission yesterday, but when he got in front of Chancellor Walter Evans today, he said the two sides had reached a "compromise."
The election commission declined to set a date for the referendum when they met last week because of a letter from Tennessee Election Coordinator Mark Goins. Attorney for the election commission Monice Hagler said a new letter from Goins, revising his opinion from the last letter, would be on its way.
