Memphis, TN – Tennessee's unemployed will no longer have to wait for their unemployment checks to come in the mail. Beginning January 18, the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development will offer newly unemployed workers two new electronic options to receive their unemployment benefits: debit cards and direct deposit.
"This update represents both savings and convenience," said state Labor Commissioner James Neeley. "The state will save a great deal of time and money processing and delivering checks, and claimants will find the new options more convenient, as they can use debit cards immediately at most banks and retail stores without waiting by the mailbox for the check to arrive."
The debit card is called Tennessee Automated Payment (TAP). Those currently receiving unemployment benefits by mail may change to the new system by going to https://ui.tn.gov.
