Some 40,000 men from the Memphis area volunteered to serve in WWII.
They served with valor and honor. Many never returned home from battle.
One of those was Carl Karem. His parents were notified of his death in combat on June 9, 1945. Carl had volunteered for the Navy after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
He had survived one wound and been awarded the Purple Heart. In April of 1945, he was killed during an attack on his ship by kamikaze pilots.
Part of the World War II exhibit at the Pink Palace is dedicated to Carl Karem. Items associated with him, including his Purple Heart, are included in the exhibit.
The Pink Palace also has exhibits honoring those who served in World War I and in Korea.
