Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Church Health

Historically, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD has been known by many names, such as "shell shock," "combat fatigue," and "soldier's heart."

But PTSD can occur in anyone who has experienced or witnessed an extremely traumatic event. This can include combat, mass violence, natural disasters, serious accidents or violent personal assaults.

Those who experience PTSD have symptoms that last for longer than four weeks. These symptoms interfere with their ability to work or carry out other daily activities or engage in satisfying personal relationships. Symptoms may include:

  • Intense flashbacks or nightmares
  • Avoiding situations that may trigger memories
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Hypervigilance, such as looking for potential signs of danger, and
  • Sadness or emotional numbness

Not everyone who experiences a traumatic event develops PTSD. Having a strong support network, practicing self-care, and seeking help are essential for healing.

The good news is that if you or a loved one might have PTSD, there are effective treatments.  Your primary care provider or therapist can help direct you to care you need.

This is Butch Odom for Church Health.
