When it comes to volunteering and community engagement, Memphis has a multitude of outlets for people to choose from. Jack Shannon, president of Christian Brothers University, and Marjorie Hass, president of Rhodes College, believe it is essential that students get involved in the community. Shannon and Hass join host Eric Barnes and Daily Memphian reporter Bill Dries for this week’s Behind the Headlines on WKNO-TV to discuss the challenges and opportunities within Memphis’ higher education.
Among the challenges facing local colleges and universities are tuition inflation and making a national mark, say Shannon and Hass.
They also talk about some of the opportunities that higher education provides for students, such as outlets for community engagement and the campus community.
Finally, the college presidents discuss the DREAM act and how their institutions support immigrant students and their studies.
