Exercising Through COVID-19

With gyms closed and options for exercise limited, many of us are finding it difficult to make regular movement a priority during these unusual times when our routines, habits, and quality of life are all changing.

Add to that the increased pressure of being an essential worker, working from home while homeschooling, or suddenly being out of work, and it’s no wonder that for many of us exercise is the last thing on our priority list. However, physical activity is an important part of an effective selfcare routine, and any kind of movement that you enjoy can have positive effects on your mental and emotional wellbeing.

If you’re finding it difficult to start or stick to a structured exercise routine, think of movement as a way to help you cope with difficult emotions, rather than something you have to make yourself do. Go for a walk, have a dance party with your kids, work in the yard, or just spend a few minutes doing whatever makes you feel good.

If regular exercise is important to you, there are plenty of options available for virtual workouts and fitness classes that you can watch online.

If you are spending more time seated, whether working from home, or just watching more TV, make sure to get up at least once an hour to stretch, get some water, or just move around a little bit.

We all have enough things to worry about right now. It’s okay if your routine has changed, and it’s okay if you’re not able to do as much as you were before. Just do the best you can to incorporate some type of movement that you enjoy into your day.
