BTH: Journalist Roundtable on State Legislation, County Budget, More

A new proposal by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, and supported by many Republicans, would allow citizens 21 and older to carry a gun without a permit or training.

Toby Sells with the Memphis Flyer says that while it appeals to 2nd Amendment groups, many law enforcement agencies argue the bill will lead to increased gun crime. The New Tri-State Defender’s Karanja Ajanaku adds that despite the outcry in urban areas, Tennessee's Republican-held supermajority will likely approve the legislation.

Also on this week's Behind the Headlines on WKNO-TV, Chalkbeat Tennessee’s Laura Faith Kebede, Daily Memphian’s Bill Dries and host Eric Barnes discuss other proposed bills, including well-drilling and an overhaul to the state’s reading instructions.

Guests also talk about the Achievement School Districts and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris' announcement of a new high school for Frayser, with Kebede revealing the challenges of both issues.

Wrapping up, guests discuss the Shelby County budget, as well as local beer news.
