BTH: Renters Face Evictions as Moratorium Lifts and Housing Market Tightens

This week on Channel 10’s Behind the Headlines, Cindy Ettingoff, CEO of Memphis Area Legal Services, Dorcas Young Griffin, Director of Shelby County Community Services, and Steve Barlow, President of Neighborhood Preservation join host Eric Barnes and the Daily Memphian reporter Bill Dries.

During the Trump administration, an eviction moratorium was put into place to help those financially struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The moratorium has since expired, however. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky signed an extension with the hope of curbing the spread of COVID.

Ettingoff says that in West Tennessee the courts (Tiger Lily LLC v. HUD) have ruled that the CDC eviction moratorium is illegal and non-binding, affecting many in Shelby County.

Guests talk about the ramifications of not having a local eviction moratorium and programs in place to help renters.

In addition, guests talk about the local housing market, as well as affordable housing.
