Schools in Shelby County and nearby regions are adjusting their schedules on Monday as the area continues to recover from widespread power outages and storm damage.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) announced on Sunday evening that all schools and district offices will be closed on Monday, August 24. The district reported that over 30 power outages were impacting more than 40 schools and administrative buildings, and restoration efforts are ongoing.
The closure comes as MLGW continues working to restore power across the area. During a news conference Sunday, MLGW President and CEO Doug McGowen said outages could continue to affect schools in the coming week and that school leaders were receiving updates from the utility every three hours.
Collierville Schools will open on Monday with a two-hour delay. The district has confirmed that all campuses have power, but some roads remain blocked or partially obstructed due to storm damage.
Under the delayed schedule, Collierville High School will begin at 9:30 a.m., middle schools at 10:15 a.m., and elementary schools at 11 a.m. Buses will operate on delayed schedules and follow regular routes unless roads remain closed or blocked.
Several private schools are also affected. Little Harding and Harding Academy's K-12 campus on Cherry Road will be closed on Monday.
Hutchison School will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, with no plans for virtual learning at this time.
Meanwhile, some schools, such as Arlington, Bartlett, Lakeland, and Millington, are expected to open as usual on Monday, as each district has confirmed that its campuses have power.
