Fans of Memphis Mayor Strickland can finally rest easy. Not only did the popular incumbent win his second term in office, the runners-up didn't come close. Political analyst Otis Sanford credits Strickland with an optimistic and on-message campaign that stressed "momentum" while others focused on big change.
A referendum to raise the sales tax by a half-cent also succeded Thursday, the result, Sanford says, of police and firemen winning over voters.
Finally, two Memphis City Council incumbents -- Berlin Boyd and Sherman Greer -- are facing runoff elections, a possible result of last year's tempest over three appointments to the council.
