TN Politics: Some Issues Aren't Just Red and Blue
Consolidating Memphis and Shelby County governments may have its benefits for cutting some red tape and bureaucracy, but political skepticism cuts across party lines.
Political analyst Otis Sanford tells WKNO that both progressive and conservative local politicians have reasons for opposing consolidation, and as the discussion moves forward, more seem to be coming out against it.
Another issue being discussed in Nashville is a bill that would do away with anonymous tips about child abuse. Some lawmakers say the system has been exploited by parents in custody battles.
Finally, State Senator Katrina Robinson of Memphis in in the midst of a federal trial for spending grant money for her nursing school on personal items. Politicians have been strangely quiet in the case. Sanford says a guilty verdict would likely bring a cascade of voices demanding her resignation.
