BTH: Carol Coletta on Memphis Riverfront Development

Rumors and conspiracy theories surround the $60 million plans for Tom Lee Park, particularly around its usefulness for the Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival. Carol Coletta, President and CEO of Memphis Riverfront Parks Partnership (MRPP), says that Memphis in May has “always been on the table.” Mediation continues between MRPP and MIM over the park's development.

Coletta joins Daily Memphian reporter Bill Dries and host Eric Barnes for this week’s WKNO-TV Behind the Headlines. Coletta reveals some proposals for the Riverfront, including a sports pavilion and new restroom facilities, as well as who will oversee the upkeep of the park.

Coletta also discusses delays in the restorative cobblestone project. Coletta says that MRPP is trying to get approval for a railroad crossing. Additionally, high water on the Mississippi River is delaying renovation to the historic cobblestones.

Wrapping up the show, Coletta talks about the “conundrum” of what to do with Mud Island River Park, and its future as a tourist destination.
