BTH: Meet Shelby County's New Criminal Court Clerk

Heidi Kuhn was in the middle of her campaign for Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk when she learned that the office was having financial troubles. The magnitude of those troubles became apparent only after she was elected and started the position.

After taking office, Kuhn and her colleagues found several unaccounted for checks and files, which were either never processed or not processed correctly. She soon launched an audit of the Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk’s office.

This week on WKNO-TV's Behind the Headlines, Kuhn talks about what the audit means with host Eric Barnes and Daily Memphian reporter Bill Dries.

Additionally, Kuhn discusses organizational changes. She wants more transparency, and to restore trust. In addition, Kuhn addresses what the clerk's office is all about, including criminal case expungements. Kuhn says that the past Criminal Court Clerk lacked the focus and energy for expungement, citing roughly 600 expungements were made last year, which she believes is too low a number.
