BTH: State Legislators on School Vouchers, Death Penalty, More.

Many legislators are divided over school vouchers, though Gov. Bill Lee's recent proposal to bring them to Tennessee is gaining traction. Lee's proposed $25 million program differs from past efforts, says State Senator Raumesh Akbari, in that vouchers could be applied toward home schooling.

This week on WKNO-TV'S Behind the Headlines, Akbari, Sen. Katrina Robinson, and Rep. Antonio Parkinson join host Eric Barnes and Daily Memphian reporter Bill Dries to discuss the voucher program.

The three Memphis Democrats have issues with the program. Parkinson says that under Lee's proposal it would “not be the parents' choice but the [private] school’s choice” on whether or not they accept a student. Parkinson sees demographic issues arising because of such legislation.

Guests also discuss changes to death penalty appeals and criminal justice reform.
