BTH: What Do Citizens Need from County and City Budgets?

Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris and Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland have submitted their budget proposals for the 2022 fiscal year. The Shelby County Commission and Memphis City Council have been meeting and coming to an agreement on their respective budgets. The conversation about spending isn't just a government exercise. A multitude of organizations are also debating about or lobbying for budget priorities.

The Executive Director of Stand for Children, Cardell Orrin, says, "[as it's told] a budget is a moral document" and it's important that the 2021-22 annual financial plan should reflect the top priorities and values of the districts it covers.

Orrin and the Executive Director of BLDG Memphis, Deveney Perry, join host Eric Barnes for this week’s WKNO-TV Behind the Headlines. Guests discuss the proposed Shelby County and City of Memphis budgets, weighing the needs and concerns of local citizens.
