Feel Fine? Get a Test Anyway, Local Officials Say

Katie Riordan

Shelby County health officials say that COVID-19 testing isn’t just about diagnosing an illness. Like masks and social distancing, it’s also a tool to help reduce asymptomatic spread of the virus.

Last weekend, about 2,500 people took part in a mass-testing event, the first following November’s Thanksgiving gatherings. About 400 people—or 16 percent—tested positive.

“The vast majority of those had no idea that they were infected with COVID and would have gone about their normal course of business interacting with other people, living their lives and potentially spreading the virus,” said Doug McGowen, the City of Memphis’ chief operating officer.

As families make plans for the holidays, health experts warn that anyone could bring home an infection. Officials are recommending frequent testing, especially for people who traveled over Thanksgiving or are planning to in the next month.

Testing sites in Shelby County are now running at about 60 to 70 percent capacity, meaning there’s availability for both sick people and those looking for an additional safety measure. Weekend surge testing events will also run through Christmas.
